Resident Programs

Therapeutic Programs

Residents are encouraged to participate in Therapeutic Recreation programs which use a person-centered and strengths based approach and promote individual choice, overall wellbeing and quality of life. Upon admission, residents are assessed to determine their individual needs and goals to decide which programs are best suited for them.

Therapeutic programs are designed to focus on the holistic health and well-being for each resident by offering programs in the social, physical, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual domains. Therapeutic Recreation, therapeutic art programming, and Music Therapy are all offered at George Derby. Calendars showcasing therapeutic programs and events are provided on the unit as well as on the George Derby Centre webpage each month. There are both in-house and community activities available, some of which are open to all residents and others to meet individual resident needs.

Resident’ Council

The Residents’ Council is facilitated monthly by the Therapeutic Recreation department. All residents of George Derby Centre are welcome to join each meeting and therefore the council members may vary each month. The Resident’s Council is a forum for generating ideas and community with George Derby Centre’s administration on matters of interest that are common to all residents. It is not a forum for individual resident or family concerns.
