How long is the wait for a care home?
The information given to you by your home health professional when they decide you are eligible for a nursing home, will include the sites you are eligible for and an approximate time for you to wait for a bed at that site. You will be able to choose your preferred care homes based on this information.
How much notice will I be given to plan for my family member’s move to complex care?
When we offer you a bed, we give you 48 hours to move in. We understand completely that such short notice may be difficult for you and we will work with you to minimize the stress related to the move.
What does it cost to live at George Derby Care Centre?
The rent you pay is determined by your taxable income and is calculated at the time of your assessment-your case manager will have discussed your rate when you signed the consent. Any costs not funded by the Ministry of Health are your responsibility. Rents are due on the first of the month and payable by pre-authorized debit.
What happens to my monthly rent if a I go to the hospital?
When residents are in hospital, the monthly rent continues to be charged as the room is reserved for the resident.
My parent has Alzheimer’s disease. Do you care for people with this condition?
Yes, George Derby Care Centre is a Complex Care Facility and provides care to residents with many different medical diagnosis. Alzheimer’s Disease is one of these. We have a special unit for residents who have needs that require more complex care.
Will my parent have to share a room?
Our facility has 300 beds, most of these are single rooms. We do have a few shared rooms. A shared room may be the first option available when you come to our facility. When a private room becomes available we will help you transfer if you have asked for a private room.
What is your staffing complement?
George Derby Center has resident care aides, licensed practical nurses and registered nurses on all shifts. Our recreation staff help to plan activities to be involved in. We also offer a variety of professional services such as Occupational and Physical Therapy, Dentistry, massage therapy, and music therapy. Our facility physicians come to George Derby to see residents and will make any needed referrals as discussed with families.
